6’8 Kur Maler from Melbourne, Australia will be joining the Bucs this season.

“Kur was the last piece we were looking for in our recruiting class,” shared Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. “We’ve been looking for another guy with size and length, but also with the ability to get up and down. We came across many possibilities, though none of them were the right fit.  Coach Eric was able to watch the Red Roos in Orlando a few weeks ago and immediately loved what he saw in Kur. He’s very long, moves really well; and with his size, he can rebound, block shots and protect the rim. On top of all of that, he also shoots it pretty well from outside too. His character and work ethic were the icing on the cake that guaranteed he was the right fit for us.”

Kur will be joining Red Roo teammate Justin Asi who signed earlier with Dawson. The two of them led their team to an 11-0 record in their two tournaments in Orlando in July. They beat teams from all over the world as they won the AAU 20U World Championship. Then they proceeded to beat powerhouse teams from all over the U.S., winning the TNBA South Battle At The Big House Tournament. Last year, Kur helped the Red Roos win the AAU Australia 18U Big Chill Championship.

Peterson added, “We’ve really had some good success with these players who have come to us from the Red Roos. Coach James and his crew do an outstanding job of opening up opportunities for these young men and training them to be successful on and off the court.”

Kur shared about his decision, “I chose to commit to Dawson to pursue my academic and basketball career. I’ve heard great things about Dawson from former students and from research. I’m confident Dawson will shape me as a leader. First off, I’d like to thank God for always giving me the chance to be a better version of myself and guiding me through life. I’d like to thank my family and friends for always showing love and support. Thanks to all my coaches that have coached me through my journey. Thanks to Coach Eric and Coach Peterson for this opportunity. Lastly, but most definitely not the least, thank you to Coach James and Red Roo basketball!”

Kur has played for Red Roo Sports, The Tribe, Waverly Falcons and Nunawading Spectres. Over the last six months with the Waverly Falcons, Kur has averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 assists a game. He is a shot blocking threat and a rebounding specialist who can also contribute offensively from the 3-point line and mid-range.

Red Roos Coach James Kerr shared his excitement, “Committing to Dawson was an opportunity that came at the right time, and one that is sincerely appreciated. Kur understands how to win. He has always been coachable, competitive and confident with how he executes on the court. Both on and off the court Kur’s character is what sets him apart from others. Working hard as well as smart is in his DNA. We wish Kur Maler nothing but success as he enters this new chapter of his life. Go Bucs!”
